In the recent transfer window, Manchester United has spent a tremendous amount of money signing new players.
Money Decided for Signings
As the transfer window opened, the financial teams at Manchester United gave around £120 million to Erik Ten Hag for signings.
However, the manager’s plans were to spend almost the double amount of money on building a stronger squad.
Erik Ten Hag’s efforts made the financial teams at Manchester United spend much more than the designated amount. According to figures, Erik Ten Hag spent over £211.5 million signing multiple players, acquiring them from different clubs.
Reason behind Overspending
Erik Ten Hag was not happy and convinced with the team he had been handed over by the former team manager, Ralf Rangnick.
The team’s performance was weak and they were hardly able to perform due to a lack of coordination and encouragement.
Erik Ten Hag knew that bringing such a team to speed would require a lot of team and support. Therefore, he knew that the team had to be overhauled and new faces had to be added.
All major names at Manchester United except for Cristiano Ronaldo left the club as their contracts ended at the club. These players include Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, and Paul Pogba.
On the other hand, players such as Amad Diallo, Eric Bailly, Dean Henderson, and Alex Telles were loaned out while Andreas Pereira was sold out to Fulham. Even Ronaldo was keen to leave the club but after so many meetings and convincing, the player decided to stay back for a season.
A Long Battle
Convincing Cristiano Ronaldo was something Erik Ten Hag had not thought about. Just like Ten Hag, Ronaldo was also not happy with the team’s performance
However, Erik Ten Hag handled the situation well and he has carried out very strategic signings that have made Ronaldo very happy.
This is the only reason Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to give it a shot and play with Manchester United.
Signings by Manchester United
As the transfer window opened, Manchester United tried hard to get Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona but they were unsuccessful. The sources revealed that Frenkie de Jong was the first choice for Manchester United.
The most expensive signing carried out by Manchester United in the recent transfer window was for Antony. The player was signed by Ajax for a high fee of £86 million.
The second-most expensive signing was for Casemiro from Real Madrid for £60 million. Lisandro Martinez was reportedly signed for £52 million and it was moved from Ajax like Antony.
The next signing was Tyrell Malacia who was moved from Feyenoord for £13.5 million. Manchester United signed Tom Huddleston for free as he was a free agent.
Christian Eriksen was signed from Brentford with no fee. Martin Dubravka has moved from Newcastle on a loan.
